Compost Crew

Based in Maryland, Compost Crew recycles food waste into compost targeting both commercial businesses and residents in the Washington area. In a pay-as-you-go subscription basis plan, the company collects food scrap from businesses, organizations, and residential customers. The collected waste is then sent to its composting facilities to be converted into compost, which is given back to customers for free twice a year. If customers require more compost they may purchase from the company at a cost. The company has also launched a new service that allows residential communities to drop off their food scrap in a Compost Crew bin that is accessible upon subscription payment. As of December 2021, the company was serving 7,000 residential and commercial customers. Some of Compost Crews' commercial customers include Mom’s Organic Market, Chaia Tacos, Wash REIT, and Kenwood House.

The company operates its own composting facility which was built on a local community organic produce grower- One Acre Farm’s space in Dickerson, Maryland. The company also operates two other compost facilities, which it has a built-in partnership with Prince George’s County and Prince William County. In 2021, Compost Crew reported that it has increased the capacity of its composting facilities in built-in partnership with farms in the area by 4x. 

Compost crew reported that in 2020, its business grew 50%, and it expanded its staff count by 25% during the year, having diverted nearly 2,500 tons of food from landfills and incinerators by 2020.

In April 2022, the company raised USD 5.5 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round led by Lattice Impact Capital.
