Sustaera develops modular direct air capture (DAC) technology to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere using renewable electricity. The company is a spin-off of Susteon, a developer of hydrogen and carbon utilization technologies. The company’s first demonstration unit was under development in North Carolina in 2022, with a capacity to remove one ton of CO2 per day. The company aims to bring down the cost of DAC to less than USD 100 per ton by 2027.
Key customers and partnerships
In March 2022, Sustaera entered into a multi-year carbon removal agreement with Shopify to purchase 5,000 tons of CO2 starting in 2024. Stripe also signed an agreement with Sustaera to remove 10 tons of CO2 per day, which was set to be completed in 2023.
Funding and financials
The company’s most recent funding was in April 2022, when it received USD 1 million in a Grant backed by XPRIZE and the Musk Foundation.
