Founded in 2013 by George Saines, Matt Lott, Nick Winter, and Scott Erickson, CodeCombat is a gaming platform that teaches children the fundamentals of coding and computer science. The platform targets 9–16 year-olds and teaches coding languages such as JavaScript, Python, HTML, and CoffeeScript. Endorsed by the College Board as a computer science curricula provider in 2019, the company has 11 units including three game development units, two web development units, and six computer science units as of August 2021.
In May 2016, the company closed its initial seed funding round of USD 2 million with participation from Third Kind Venture Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Allen & Company. The funds were used to develop a new classroom offering that was tested successfully by over 25,000 children. In August 2019, the company raised USD 6 million in Series A financing in a round led by Hone Capital with participation from Extol Capital, OceanOne Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz. This funding was used to develop a new game on the Ozaria platform, which aims to teach computer science and programming concepts through a “narrative-driven fantasy adventure.”
