Founded in 2017, Amsterdam-based Mr. & Mrs. Watson specializes in producing artisanal cheese. It operates a vegan restaurant and is most recognized for its range of cashew-based cheeses. During the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, it opened a specialist production facility and food lab, which uses traditional fermentation techniques to produce recognizable cheeses using cashew milk. Its portfolio, as of May 2022, includes camembert alternatives, vegan mozzarella, and a goat’s cheese replacement. The company was set to unveil an animal-free Gouda cheese wheel in Q4 2022 and was developing a melting cheese set for release in Summer 2022.
Funding and financials
The company initially received support via crowdfunding and in January 2022 raised EUR 700,000 (~USD 798,630) in a seed funding round. The funds were expected to be used to develop its cheese production facility, expand its plant-based cheese brand, and launch a new range of products for the international retail market. In May 2022 , it announced a second seed funding round to support the launching of the plant-based cheese in specialty stores and Dutch supermarkets in Q4 2022.
