Akura Medical, a portfolio company of Shifamed LLC, develops a differentiated mechanical thrombectomy platform designed to address the major challenges of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The company's platform is a low-profile solution intended to easily access and efficiently remove large-volume, mixed-morphology clots while eliminating guesswork around the procedure.
The platform integrates aspiration and maceration technology, incorporating high-velocity intersecting jets in a 12-F catheter, enabling efficient removal of thrombus regardless of morphology or volume without catheter clogging. It features a soft, atraumatic distal funnel to enhance clot engagement. The platform continuously monitors hemodynamic data through a sensor at the catheter tip, allowing physicians to identify when a clot has been removed. It also includes an integrated port for on-demand contrast injection to visualize the catheter's position relative to the clot.
As of November 2024, the system was in the research and development phase and had not received FDA clearance or CE mark approval.
