NoPalm Ingredients, founded in 2021, is a Dutch biotech startup that specializes in fermentation-derived palm oil alternatives. The company uses a unique fermentation process with non-GMO yeasts to convert locally sourced agrifood side streams into oils and fats that serve as drop-in substitutes for palm oils in various products, including food, cosmetics, and personal care items.
NoPalm Ingredients claims its yeast fats provide the desired viscosity, emulsifying, and melting properties for applications in confectionery, bakery, dairy, spreads, creams, cheese, and even cocoa butter mimetics. Further, its technology reportedly reduces CO2 emissions by 90% and land use by 99% compared with traditional palm oil production.
In June 2024, the company expanded its in-house production capacity with a 400-liter fermenter. It is on track for industrialization and commercialization by 2025, with plans to produce 1.5 million kilograms of sustainable oil annually.
Key customers and partnerships
The company has partnered with many food tech incumbents to explore the use of its technology and fermented oils in different applications. In September 2023, it partnered with Unilever to use side streams from ice cream production to develop the first-ever bouillon cube made with microbial oils. In October 2023, it collaborated with a cohort of food tech incumbents, which included Mista, Danone, Givaudan, AAK, and Ingredion, to develop a plant-based yogurt derived from NoPalm’s yeast oil.
In April 2024, NoPalm partnered with Lamb Weston and Zeelandia to produce a sustainable palm oil alternative from potato residuals.
