Kaleidos is a Spanish open-source product developer that offers Penpot (launched in 2021) a free-to-use open-source solution for the design and prototyping of digital products and platforms. Kaleidos’ product portfolio also includes Taiga, an open-source project management platform for managing agile projects used by over 1 million users.
In September 2022, Penpot claimed it had seen a huge amount of adoption since the announcement of Adobe's acquisition of Figma (40% growth in signups before the announcement vs 5,600% growth in signups afterward) and this was likely due to the concerns among designers that Adobe might improperly integrate Figma’s key features into Adobe XD and shut down Figma afterward to gain back the revenue it had lost when Figma was free.
Key customers and partnerships
As of September 2022, Penpot is used by over 10,000 companies including Google, Microsoft, Red Hat, Tencent, Bytedance, and Mozilla. Taiga's customer base includes companies such as HP, Red Hat, and Tata.
Funding and financials
Penpot raised USD 12 million in a funding round led by Decibel in February 2023. This follows the company’s USD 8 million funding round in September 2022 . The funds were allocated for platform growth and to develop more tools that are compatible with cloud-based, self-hosted, and local systems.
