XL Batteries is a developer of next-generation flow batteries. Flow Batteries refer to large and scalable batteries developed in the early 1970s that use a liquid to store the charge molecules, which are then flowed over electrodes when charging or discharging.
XL batteries develop its flow batteries with a mild salt-water-based chemistry which allows it to overcome the highly corrosive nature of vanadium-based traditional flow batteries.
Key customers and partnerships
In January 2023, the company signed an MoU with Stolthaven Terminals to jointly develop a flow battery with industrial-scale electricity storage capability.
Funding and financials
XL Batteries’ latest funding round was in February 2023, when it raised USD 10 million in a seed funding round led by Catalus Capital, with participation from Xerox Ventures, SIP Global, and its founding investors. The funds were earmarked for the development of its first pilot system and initiatives towards its goal of a 500 kW/5 MWh commercial system by 2025.
