SnappCar is a Dutch peer-to-peer car sharing platform that allows individuals to rent out their personal vehicles to others. The company was founded in 2011 by Victor van Tol and Pascal Ontijd in Utrecht. SnappCar operates on a free-floating model, meaning users can pick up and drop off cars anywhere within designated zones without the need for a fixed parking spot.
SnappCar's business model is centered around enabling more efficient use of existing vehicles. Statistics show that the average car in the Netherlands is stationary for 23 hours a day. By facilitating car sharing, SnappCar aims to remove five out of 10 cars from the road, resulting in reduced emissions, less congestion, and more available space in cities.
A key feature of SnappCar is its "Keyless" technology, which allows renters to access cars using the SnappCar app without the need for a physical key exchange. This convenience has made SnappCar's offerings more popular, with Keyless cars receiving up to three times more rental requests.
In April 2024, AutoBinck Group, a Dutch mobility and energy solutions company, became the sole owner of SnappCar, consolidating ownership from multiple shareholders. This acquisition reflects AutoBinck's commitment to SnappCar's growth and aligns with the company's mission of "Making innovative mobility and energy solutions accessible for all."
As of 2024, SnappCar has over 10,000 car owners sharing their vehicles on the platform. Each shared car on SnappCar replaces approximately seven privately owned cars, contributing to improved air quality and freeing up space in cities.
Key customers and partnerships
SnappCar has established partnerships with various private lease companies in the Netherlands, including ALD Automotive, Justlease, Directlease, Business Lease, and LeasePlan. Through these collaborations, private lease drivers can receive rebates on their lease fees if they share their cars on SnappCar at least twice a month. This arrangement has proven successful, with private lease drivers being twice as likely to share their cars compared to SnappCar users who own their vehicles outright.
