Albertsons Companies, Inc. (NYSE: ACI) is a US food and drug grocery chain. Albertsons has been listed on the NYSE since 2020. It was the fourth-largest player in the US food and drug grocery market with a market share of 4.5% in 2021. Albertsons generated revenue of USD 77.6 billion in FY2023 (year ending February 26, 2023).
In October 2022, Albertsons and Kroger revealed plans for a merger to be finalized in early 2024. The merger would unite nearly 5,000 grocery stores from both companies, making the latter the second-largest food retailer in the US (trailing only behind Walmart). However, a private lawsuit was filed in February 2023 challenging the merger, alleging a breach of anti-competitive laws.
As of February 2023, Albertsons operated 2,271 stores across 34 US states and the District of Columbia under 24 brand names, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, Acme, and Tom Thumb. This also included 1,722 pharmacies, 1,328 in-store coffee shops, and 401 adjacent fuel centers, along with 22 distribution centers and 19 manufacturing facilities. Albertsons serves ~34.7 million customers per week through its physical stores and digital channels, such as an online platform for grocery pick-up and delivery and a mobile application.
During Q3 FY2022, Albertsons executed its “Customer for Life” strategy, which focuses on involving omnichannel engagement, improved in-store experiences, expanded product offerings, robust supply chains, and ESG integration. Albertsons expects to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
