Zola Electric is a Dutch company providing off-grid home solar systems designed to overcome inadequate access to energy in developing markets. As of April 2022, Zola Electric had installed more than 385,000 home solar systems, serving nearly 1.5 million people, across 10 countries across three continents. This includes Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, the US, and Brazil.
Zola Electric offers three solar power systems: Zola Infinity (integrates solar and energy storage to power houses and office appliances), Zola Flex (plug-and-play solar and lithium-ion battery power system), and Zola Vision (a consumer app that provides data, analytics, and control of systems). Zola Electric follows a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) model, allowing users to pay in installments through mobile payment solutions.
Key customers and partnerships
In May 2021, Zola signed a distribution partnership with Blue Camel. In December 2022, Zola signed a distribution partnership with Haiti Green Solutions to expand operations to Haiti. Other distribution partners include EDF, Total, Distributed Power Africa (DPA), Micro-power, and Econet Energy.
In October 2023, Zola partnered with Wetility to use Zola’s Flex Max off-grid home solar home solution to address load shedding in South Africa.
Funding and financials
Zola Electric’s most recent funding was in September 2021, when it raised USD 90 million in debt and equity. The equity round of USD 45 million was led by TotalEnergies Ventures. The funds were utilized for product development and commercialization.
