Fiction Foods, a Vancouver-based intelligent food design company, aims to produce food with the greatest nutrient-to-resource ratio (greater functional nutrition at a lower environmental cost) by using emerging technologies in fermentation and cellular agriculture. Each ingredient is not only environmentally friendly but is also organized in a synergistic manner within each formula to arrive at a dietary solution that is optimal for human and environmental health. Founded by Brendan Brazier (co-founder of Vega and Pulp Culture, bestselling author of the Thrive book series, and co-developer of Beyond Meat's Beast Burger), Fiction Foods is a portfolio company of CULT Food Science (CULT).
In February 2022, Fiction Foods announced that the commercial launch of its egg alternative, “Performance Scramble”, was scheduled for 3Q 2022. The startup completed bench-scale formulation and prototyping work for Performance Scramble, which can be used to replace chicken eggs. The product is made using euglena, a signal-cell organism that contains high-quality protein similar to animal protein. The startup claims that while conventional applications include all typical uses of chicken eggs, the functional nutrition is much superior and comes at a fraction of the environmental cost.
Funding and financials
In November 2021, CULT led the inaugural funding round for Fiction Foods by way of a strategic investment. CULT is the sole financier and maintains certain rights on future investment opportunities. The two entities hope to work closely to incubate and accelerate product development growth, by leveraging synergies across their networks, human and scientific capital, as well as access to intellectual property, technology, and patent portfolios.
