Lisaqua is a French deeptech startup founded in 2018 that has developed an innovative aquaculture system for sustainable shrimp farming. The company's patented "permaquaculture" technology combines shrimp, microorganisms, and marine invertebrates in indoor recirculating aquaculture farms. This closed-loop system allows for antibiotic-free shrimp production while preserving biodiversity, reducing feed consumption by 20%, and saving 99% of water compared to conventional shrimp farming methods. Lisaqua's process also treats and reuses shrimp effluents to breed marine invertebrates for animal feed, creating a circular economy approach.
Since 2019, Lisaqua has been marketing fresh, local, and environmentally friendly shrimp in France with a "triple zero" guarantee: zero antibiotics, zero kilometers traveled, and zero polluting discharge. In 2022, the company established its first commercial shrimp farm near Nantes, producing 10 tonnes of shrimp annually for local fishmongers and restaurants, including some Michelin-starred establishments. Lisaqua utilizes digital twin technology to analyze farm data and optimize parameters for replication across multiple facilities.
The company is currently preparing to construct Europe's largest shrimp farm in the Paris region by 2024, with a planned production capacity of 500 tonnes per year. This facility will incorporate industrial ecology principles by utilizing residual heat from a waste energy recovery unit in Seine-et-Marne. Lisaqua aims to establish a network of large-scale farms near major French and European cities, targeting a cumulative production of 10,000 tonnes of shrimp annually by 2030.
