Neupulse

Neupulse is a UK-based company that has developed a wearable device aimed at managing the symptoms of Tourette's syndrome, a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. The device, which was spun out from the University of Nottingham in 2021, stimulates the median nerve in the wrist through electrical pulses, reducing the frequency and severity of tics.

The Neupulse device works by delivering rhythmic patterns of mild electrical stimulation to the median nerve at the wrist, increasing the power and synchronicity of brain oscillations associated with the suppression of movements. This stimulation has been shown to dramatically reduce the frequency of tics and remove the urge-to-tic in individuals with Tourette's syndrome.

In a UK-wide clinical trial, participants who received active stimulation from the device experienced a significant reduction in tic severity and frequency. On average, they saw a reduction in tic frequency of more than 25% while undergoing stimulation. After using the device for four weeks, people who received active stimulation experienced a reduction in their tic severity of more than 35%, with 59% reporting at least a 25% reduction compared to baseline.

In March 2024, Neupulse secured USD 3.2 million in seed financing to finalize the prototype and initiate regulatory applications, with the goal of making the device commercially available globally in the coming years.
