Hydrogen Economy?

South Korea-based Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) is a subsidiary of Doosan Corporation, a diversified conglomerate. DMI is a developer of mobile hydrogen fuel cell technology for use in drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The company’s proprietary next-gen water-cooled fuel cells are used in larger and heavier mobility applications such as logistics drones. DMI’s flagship product, the DS30W, is a hydrogen fuel cell-powered drone with a flight time of up to two hours and a range of 80 km.

Key customers and partnerships

In March 2023, the company partnered with the MIT Electric Vehicle Team to build a hydrogen-powered motorcycle to expand the capabilities of small fuel cell technologies. Then, in April 2023, DMI collaborated with DroneUp, a drone solutions provider, to test their drones using DMI’s hydrogen fuel cell technology. The company is also working with the Ministry of National Defense, and is conducting pilot projects with the Republic of Korea Army to develop military solutions. In September 2023, DMI signed an MoU with ILJIN Hysolus (Korea), under which ILJIN Hysolus will develop a liquid hydrogen storage module and fuel control system for DMI's hydrogen drones, while DMI will provide the hydrogen drone body and develop a user interface that can monitor the status of the module in real time.

In June 2022, the company signed a new master distributor agreement with Volatus Aerospace, a Canadian developer of unmanned aerial solutions, to expand its distribution capabilities in the US. The company has also signed distributor agreements with Hover UAV (for the Australian and New Zealand markets), AYES Group (for the Turkish market), and FRP Advanced Technologies Aerospace & Defence (for the European market)

Funding and financials

In April 2022, the company raised KRW 27 billion (USD 22.2 million) in a venture round led by IDG Capital, Korea Investment Partners, and DS Asset Management. The proceeds were used to develop logistics cargo drones powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology.
