Leaft Foods is a New Zealand-based startup that develops plant-based protein ingredients from leaves. The company has developed a food-safe technology to extract rubisco (the protein responsible for photosynthesis) from nitrogen-fixing crops, such as lucerne, and convert it into a tasteless and odorless protein powder. According to the company, rubisco contains a similar amino acid profile to beef, has no allergens, and can be used in a range of plant-based applications.
Funding and financials
In April 2022, the company raised NZD 15 million (~USD 9 million) in a Series A funding round with participation from Khosla Ventures, Steven Adams, Ngai Tahu, and ACC’s Climate Change Impact Fund. The funding was to be used for expanding R&D, growth efforts, and expansion into the US for the development of a global value chain.
