Backstage is a freelance marketplace for content creators which was founded as a magazine in 1960. It connects content creators with talent needed for their visual, audio, and production services such as commercials, branded content, TV series, and theater performances. The company reports a freelancer base of more than 250,000, with more than 20 million content creators and talent seekers such as casting directors, brand and acquisition marketers, production companies, and more.
In February 2021, the company announced the acquisition of two freelance marketplaces for creatives, StarNow and The Mandy Network. The financial terms of the transactions were not disclosed. StarNow is a New Zealand-based talent platform for actors, models, influencers, and artists, while The Mandy Network is a UK-based talent platform for cast, crew, production services, and creative professionals.
The acquisitions were funded by a strategic investment from TA Associates as well as investments from senior management at Backstage. The acquisitions complement Backstage’s global expansion plans as it can now leverage StarNow’s market position in Australasia along with The Mandy Network’s creative community.
