Based in the Netherlands, Northern Wonder's flagship product, Coffee-Free Coffee, is a coffee substitute made by blending and roasting a combination of cereals, legumes, and roots. The primary ingredients include lupin beans, chickpeas, chicory, blackcurrants, barley, and rye. To mimic the caffeine content of regular coffee, the company uses synthetically produced caffeine from a non-tropical source.
The product line currently consists of filter grounds and Nespresso-compatible capsules, available in both caffeinated and decaffeinated variants. An espresso-style dark roast is also available through the company's website. Northern Wonder's beanless coffee requires 95% less water per cup, uses 66% less land, and emits 76% less carbon during production compared with conventional coffee, according to a 2023 lifecycle assessment commissioned by the company. The company notes that its new product lines are priced competitively, with the 250 g ground coffee and 10-capsule options ranging from EUR 4.49 to EUR 5.29 (USD 4.8 to USD 5.7) per package.
Key customers and partnerships
In addition to its direct-to-consumer online sales, Northern Wonder has secured partnerships with leading supermarket chains in the Netherlands and Switzerland for the retail distribution of its beanless coffee products. In September 2023, Northern Wonder launched its Coffee-Free Coffee retail range across 534 Albert Heijn supermarket stores in the Netherlands, with plans to expand to another leading European retailer. The company is also working on developing whole-bean alternatives that can be used in standard coffee machines while locking in volatile aromas for an enhanced coffee-like experience. The company is also exploring opportunities in the specialty coffee shop segment, targeting businesses with a focus on sustainability.
