Enpal is a Berlin-based company that provides all-in-one renewable energy solutions consisting of solar panels, battery, wallbox, heat pump and energy management system for customers across Germany and Italy.  Founding and early history Enpal was founded in 2017 by Mario Kohle, Jochen Ziervogel, and Viktor Wingert. The company received early backing from Lukasz Gadowski, the prominent entrepreneur and venture capitalist, and several board members of the Zalando fashion conglomerate. Enpal’s co-founders initially developed a sales-based business model, where end-users could purchase PV systems. Early market research suggested that a lease model would attract more uptake from customers who didn’t want the hassle of high investment costs and maintaining the solar system by themselves.  The company settled on a 20-year lease term, which proved wildly successful during the first few years of its existence. Its lease agreements require no upfront payment from the customer and include installation, insurance, maintenance and other services. Rapid growth and expansion For most of its history, Enpal focused on the German market, first around its hometown of Berlin and later throughout the whole country. During the late 2010s and early 2020s, the company opened several satellite offices in an effort to provide responsive, localized sales and service to customers across the country. In 2021, Enpal opened a state-of-the-art training center for solar PV installers, where it trains its rapidly growing team of craftsmen. The company now has more than 200 local installer teams, whose members make up the bulk of Enpal’s employee roster, and a robust, efficient supply chain. Enpal’s key backers have included major impact investors and climate-tech venture firms, including Princeville Climate Technologies, Softbank Vision Fund II, TPG Rise Climate, HV Capital, The Westly Group, and Activate Capital. Co-founder Mario Kohle remains a managing director of the company. Fellow co-founders Jochen Ziervogel and Viktor Wingert (the current Chief Investment Officer) remain deeply involved as well.  Enpal has won a number of awards over the years, including first place in the German Sustainability Prize Next Economy Award 2022, first place in the 2023 Smart Home Germany Awards, a 2023/2024 Stern Companies of the Future award, Die Welt #1 Service Champion in Customer Service Award, and KfW Award for Entrepreneurs 2022. The Enpal app was also awarded as Germany’s best solar management app. The company has also been among Germany’s fastest-growing companies in 2022 and 2023 based on the FT1000 ranking. Enpal today Today, Enpal has installed more than 60,000 solar PV systems across Germany and Italy. As of late 2022, Enpal is recognized as the market leader for solar PV installations in Germany. The company’s 2022 revenues exceeded 400 million euros on a headcount of more than 1,000 employees. After pivoting away from the sales model and focusing on leased systems for most of its history, Enpal added back a sales option in 2023 to accommodate customers who want to buy their solar solution. Either model can save the customer tens of thousands of euros over the course of a system’s 20- to 25-year useful lifespan, according to company data. Enpal has also diversified its product offerings in recent years. It now offers all-in-one renewable energy solutions consisting of solar panels, battery, wallbox, heat pump and energy management system.

Chiron Energy is an independent Italian group that develops, builds, and operates state-of-the-art renewable energy plants and infrastructure with a very low environmental impact. The company specializes in constructing and commissioning incentivized photovoltaic plants across various regions of Italy, including Veneto, Lombardy, Piedmont, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Established in late 2020 by Mario Pesaresi and his son Paolo, Chiron Energy has rapidly emerged as one of the leading solar developers in the Italian market. The company has an authorized pipeline of over 250 MWp of greenfield solar projects and has already secured financing for several projects through green loans from lenders like UniCredit.
In November 2021, Chiron Energy concluded the authorization processes for six photovoltaic plants in northern Italy with a total capacity of 25 MW. These plants, scheduled to become operational in 2024, are expected to produce 100% renewable energy, avoiding the release of approximately 9,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
In June 2022, the company issued a EUR 5 million ESG-linked minibond with a bullet maturity of December 31, 2026, fully subscribed by the Progetto Minibond Italia fund. This minibond provides rate benefits linked to Chiron Energy's sustainability and ESG rating, supporting the company's ambitious growth and investment plans.
In April 2023, Chiron Energy secured a EUR 17 million green loan from UniCredit to fund the construction and commissioning of four new renewable energy production plants with a total installed capacity of over 19 MWp. Once operational by November 2023, these plants are expected to produce around 27 GWh of electricity annually, covering the needs of approximately 9,000 Italian households while avoiding emissions of over 14,000 tons of CO₂ equivalents per year.

Enel Green Power is a subsidiary of the Enel Group, focused on developing, constructing, and operating renewable energy plants globally. As of 2020, the company operated approximately 80 plants with a managed capacity of around 5.8 GW powered by wind, hydropower, geothermal, and solar energy across 18 US states and one Canadian province.
Enel Green Power plays a vital role in increasing the renewable energy capacity in North America. One of its notable projects is the 497 MW Roadrunner solar farm in Upton County, Texas, which became fully operational in September 2020. The bifacial solar modules used in this project can double production by capturing ground reflections. Enel Green Power implemented its sustainable construction model during the Roadrunner project, reusing materials and recycling construction waste.
In addition to the Roadrunner project, Enel Green Power operates several other wind farms in the US, including the 66 MW Whitney Hill and 185 MW Hilltopper wind farms in Illinois, the 450 MW High Lonesome wind farm in Texas, and the 236.5 MW White Cloud wind project in Missouri. The company's renewable energy portfolio generates over five GW of clean energy annually across North America.
Enel Green Power has set a target to add 6.5 GW of new renewable capacity through 2024 across North America. The company has entered into power purchase agreements (PPAs) for its renewable projects, such as a 12-year PPA with Mondelez International for 65 MW from the Roadrunner solar farm in October 2019 and a 12-year 70 MW virtual PPA with The Clorox Company for energy from the same project starting in 2021.

Solaris (formerly known as Solarisbank) offers a banking-as-a-service (BaaS) platform through a set of APIs (over 400 as of July 2023) for FinTech developers to build consumer products. Solaris offers a range of banking services, such as digital banking and card management, lending services, payments, and know-your-customer (KYC) solutions. It also offers a digital assets infrastructure platform to embed scalable crypto services for end-users, and <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/9313">security brokerage tools </a>for on-exchange and off-exchange trading. The company acquired <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/4478">peer BaaS platform provider Contis </a>in July 2021, for an undisclosed sum (subsequently approved by regulators in January 2022). Solaris intended to leverage the acquisition to spread its operations further across Europe and enter Asia. Key customers and partnerships As of July 2021, Solaris worked with around 50 companies, which included challenger banks, business banking providers, trading apps, and crypto startups, among others. In December 2020, Solaris became the first German bank to migrate its core banking system, digital products, and databases to the cloud. The company claimed to be growing at 40-60% annually as of July 2021, and managed around 2 million end customer accounts. <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/7143">Solaris partnered with viafintech GmbH </a>(a subsidiary of British payments platform Paysafe), a barcode-based payment infrastructure provider, in December 2021, to expand its digital banking infrastructure. Through the partnership, Solaris’s user were able to provide end customers with over 20,000 cash deposit and withdrawal points across Europe. Funding and financials Solaris’ net revenues reportedly grew 30% YoY in 2022 to reach EUR 130 million (USD 143.3 million); however, it was yet to turn profitable (having experienced a EUR 56 million [USD 61.8 million] loss). UK-based Meniga offers banking infrastructure through application programming interfaces (APIs) for banks to build digital banking solutions. Its infrastructure enables user enterprises to include data and finance management solutions including personal and business finance management as well as cash flow assistance. The infrastructure enables banks to personalize offerings to clients using personal data. In addition to legacy banking services, the infrastructure also offers “Carbon Insights”, which tracks the estimated carbon footprint of individual transactions to help reduce their personal carbon footprint. In March 2021, Iceland-based Íslandsbanki, became the first Nordic bank to implement the Carbon Insights Solution, to its digital banking offering.Key customers and partnerships As of March 2021, the company had 165 banking clients with operations in over 30 countries.  Founded in 2018, Milan-based Planet Farms manufactures pesticide-free vertical farming products. Kale, Vivace, Esotico, Delicato, and Rucool are among the leafy greens produced by Planet Farms. According to the company, its products have no pesticides, use 95% less water, and are grown close to consumers, with full traceability, year-round availability, and a fully integrated supply chain. Planet Farms creates custom-made rooms known as growth rooms, which are distinct habitats best suited for each type.
 
 
 Planet Farms&rsquo; first vertical farm was in Cavenago in Brianza, in the outskirts of Milan. As of February 2023, the company was working to expand throughout Italy and Europe with new vertical farms. Planet Farms has vertical farms of over 9,000 sqm and produces salad greens and aromatic herbs. Planet Farms' leafy salads can be found in the major Italian distribution chains Esselunga, Il Viaggiator Goloso, and Iper La Grande I.

New insurance models are disrupting a centuries-old industry with a focus on personalization and convenience

InsurTech: Personal Lines

Berlin-based wefox offers digital automobile and home insurance via a mobile app. It also operates a <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/18304">global affinity business</a> that connects insurance companies with distribution partners to expand their distribution network and improve sales. The company operated in five European markets as of July 2024 including Austria, Italy, Poland, Netherlands and Switzerland.&nbsp;The company sells its insurance policies via agents, and also partners with associate brokers to sell its policies. As such, wefox offers personalized advice on its insurance policies, which it claims saves up to 5% on users’ current premium. It also guarantees matching or better conditions on insurance, with advisors helping to source suitable coverage if an appropriate wefox policy is unavailable. Through its mobile app, users can access their insurance policy documents, update their personal details, and file and track progress on claims.&nbsp;Additionally, wefox had plans to release its technology stack through the use of APIs that would allow other insurance companies to develop their own insurance products, along with monitoring and claims handling capabilities.In July 2024, the company <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/32181">exited the German market</a> as part of its portfolio refocusing strategy. Casavo is an Italian company that allows users to list, buy, and sell homes in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal through its platform. The platform provides an algorithmic valuation tool that allows users to receive an instant valuation of the home, based on comparison with similar characteristics and the location of the residential property. The platform charges a service fee of 1.5% (Italy) on homes sold with Casavo. The platform also provides house mortgage services, free of charge for buyers purchasing a Casavo property.Casavo acquired realisti.co, a platform that creates virtual tours on properties, for an undisclosed amount in October 2020. Through this acquisition, Casavo planned to utilize realisti.co’s technology to provide clients with an improved digital purchasing experience from virtual property tours. In October 2022, Casavo <a href="https://sp-edge.com/updates/13525">acquired Proprioo</a>, a France-based virtual marketplace and lead generation platform for residential properties for an undisclosed sum. Northvolt is a Swedish company aiming to mass-manufacture lithium-ion batteries for EVs, grid storage, and other industrial applications. Northvolt targets a 25% European market share by 2030.&nbsp;&nbsp;Northvolt commenced production at its first commercial factory in Skelleftea, Sweden, in December 2021. The annual capacity was expected to ramp up to 32 GWh by 2024, with the potential to expand to 60 GWh in the future. Northvolt also uses a low-energy hydrometallurgical treatment to recover a variety of metals such as nickel, manganese, cobalt, copper, and even aluminum and plastics from spent battery cells. The process can isolate the metals and separate them from impurities with the use of an aqueous solution. The recovered metals are sourced to third parties as raw materials for their production processes. Northvolt&rsquo;s customer partnerships include BMW Group, Volkswagen, and Epiroc.

The facility is expected to be Europe&rsquo;s largest battery recycling plant and the only large-scale facility capable of recycling lithium in addition to nickel, manganese, cobalt, and other metals in Europe. Additionally, the company provides GetYourGuide Originals, launched in 2018, and consists of tours of major destinations developed by GetYourGuide in collaboration with local operating partners. In June 2023, GetYourGuide expanded its 'Originals by GetYourGuide' collection with a new sports category which features motorsport, basketball, sailing and other sports-related tours.
