BioFastionTech (BFT) is a Dutch startup that converts textile waste into new raw materials that can be used for biocomposites and chemistry. Founded in 2022, BFT’s process shreds textile waste into fine scraps and is subjected to a patent-pending low-energy biotech process that converts the textile scraps into new chemical molecules, like sugars. The process is able to recover mixed synthetic plastic fibers and dyes from the textile for use in new applications as an alternative to biomass for the production of biofuels, biogas, perfumes, vegan leather, or textile dyes.
BFT claims its technology can be used with multi-material textiles and different colors without requiring preliminary sorting. The process also separates synthetic fibers from organic ones without compromising the quality of the synthetic fibers. The company was yet to commercialize its technology as of February 2024.
Funding and financials:
While the company was yet to raise any funding as of February 2024, it participated in a number of accelerator programs, including Sisal’s GoBeyond Program (December 2022), Creative Destruction Lab – Paris (October 2022), Yes!Delft Accelerator (April 2022), and ClimateLaunchpad (May 2021)
