Next-Gen Leather is a Spanish startup that produces bio-based leather using its proprietary biotechnological process. The company’s bio-based leather, Corium, possesses mechanical properties and appearance that mimic animal leather. Corium’s characteristics can be customized per client requirements and can be used in industries ranging from footwear, leather goods, home goods, book and stationery binding, and storage cases.
Next-Gen Leather uses bacterial cell culture and biofabrication to produce Corium in a process that uses less time, water, and energy and involves no harmful chemicals. The company claims Corium’s manufacturing production yields unique natural patterns for every piece and that it is biodegradable. The company had yet to commercialize its technology, as of February 2024.
Funding and financials
In June 2022, the company raised EUR 450,000 (~USD 485,000) in a seed round led by BeAble Capital to support the production, scale-up, and deployment of Corium into consumer goods.
