Neon offers an open-source serverless database management system based on Postgres that provides autoscaling, multi-cloud compatibility, and unlimited storage for developers to efficiently scale their applications. The solution’s architecture separates storage and computation to enable developers to reduce costs. This is done by activating incoming connections only when required and offloading data that is rarely accessed to third-party services such as Amazon S3.
The company also plans to implement a “copy-on-write” technique that delivers checkpointing, branching, and “point-in-time” restore. This enables users to create branches of databases for test environments every time new code is deployed.
