ECOncrete is an Israeli company offering high-performance concrete solutions for urban and coastal marine infrastructure, such as seawalls, breakwaters, bridge foundations, and urban waterfronts.
ECOncrete’s design promotes the growth of organisms, such as oysters, corals, or barnacles on the structure’s surface, which acts as a biological glue and enhances its strength and durability. According to the company, compared to traditional concrete, ECOncrete supports up to 2x more biodiversity, 7x more carbon storage, 16x better water quality, and has up to 10% greater compressive strength and durability. Furthermore, ECOncrete’s admixture is predominantly composed of byproducts and recycled materials and is up to 92% carbon neutral.
The ECOncrete is made from three core patented elements: 1) bio-enhancing concrete compositions (Admix, which when mixed with regular concrete mix creates a chemically-balanced concrete); 2) Texture agents (mold-modifying agents, liners, and coatings that create complex surface textures allowing for marine life to develop); and 3) Science-based molds (molds and mold-inserts supporting the creation of ecological niches and providing increased strength and durability to the structure).
As of August 2023, the company carried out over 40 marine infrastructure projects across 13 countries. The company manufactures its Admix and mold liners in Israel or through licensed manufacturing partners in Europe and the US, after which it is shipped to project sites for on-site casting and installation.
