Canada-based Aurora Hydrogen produces green hydrogen by using microwave energy. The company’s proprietary microwave pyrolysis technology heats natural gas in the absence of oxygen and water to produce green hydrogen and solid carbon with zero emissions. This process uses 80% less electricity than electrolysis, which is the conventional method of producing green hydrogen.
As announced in March 2023, the company is building a 200-kg-per-day hydrogen demonstration plant for field trials in Edmonton, Canada. The month before, Aurora Hydrogen and Acceleware equally shared a grant of CAD 2 million (USD 1.5 million) from Alberta Innovates to jointly develop a two-year green hydrogen project using methane pyrolysis using radio frequency energy.
Key customers and partnerships
In September 2022, the company entered into a partnership with Acceleware, which is working to develop new Clean Tech Inverter (CTI) industrial heating applications through collaborative partnerships, and which will use its collaboration with Aurora to produce CTI-powered clean hydrogen via methane pyrolysis. In September 2023, Aurora entered into a software license agreement with CPFD Software to use its Barracuda Virtual Reactor to improve understanding and accelerate technology development of a fluidized bed-based methane pyrolysis pilot plant.
Funding and financials
In February 2023, the company received a CAD 2 million (USD 1.5 million) grant from Alberta Innovates, followed by a CAD 3.9 million (USD 3 million) grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). The funds were used to further scale up Aurora’s green hydrogen production technology. In August 2022, the company raised CAD 12.85 million (USD 10 million) in a Series A funding round led by Energy Innovation Capital.
