Co-founded by Rohan Mahimker and Alex Peters in 2011, Prodigy Education offers mathematics education solutions for students, parents, teachers, and school districts. Prodigy Math Game is a free, game-based, adaptive platform that features more than 1,400 curriculum-aligned mathematical exercises for students in grades 1-8. Prodigy Math Tutors is a one-on-one online mathematics tutoring platform. As of January 2021, Prodigy Education had more than 100 million registered users globally across more than 90,000 schools of which two-thirds were US-based.
In January 2021, the company raised CAD 159 million (USD 125 million) in a Series B funding round that is one of the largest funding rounds in North American educational technology history. The company plans to use the funding to extend its market reach beyond North America with a focus on India, Australia, and the UK. The funding will also support further development of its Prodigy Math Game and Prodigy Math Tutors products.
In February 2021, the company was accused of using deceptive marketing and manipulative tactics in a complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, a nonprofit advocacy group. The letter was co-signed by more than 20 other consumer rights, parent, and education advocacy groups. The campaign requests that the FTC investigate Prodigy, which it claims creates inequality in classrooms by portraying paid subscribers as being superior to free users and pressures parents into buying subscriptions they may not be able to afford.
