Kamilo

Kamilo is a California-based waste traceability company that tracks and verifies plastic waste as it moves through the supply chain, from the collection of plastic waste to recycling them into new products. The company also provides certification of recycled content and real-time metrics on associated environmental metrics resulting from the use of recovered materials. Kamilo delivers these data and analytics to clients and partners engaged in plastics origination, recovery, processing, recycling and reuse. 

The company's technology assigns a unique digital identity to plastic waste in the recycling supply chain, tracking and creating a digital twin plastic movement. It transmits the chain of custody to a low-energy, blockchain-based ledger and displays the history of repurposed plastic waste on a real-time map. Kamilo also provides anonymity options for companies that prefer not to be identified as buyers or sellers while still providing general data to show where the material has traveled.

Key customers and partnerships

In October 2021, Kamilo partnered with Esri, a leading geographic information system (GIS) software company, becoming a member of the Esri Partner Network Startup Program. Kamilo's technology is hosted on Esri's geospatial portal, integrating shipment data with GIS layers. The software uses the EPA's Waste Reduction Model (WARM) to calculate the greenhouse gas impacts of using recycled resins and shipping. The company is also in discussions with multiple global organizations that recognize the need for third-party verified traceability of plastic waste.

Funding and financials

In November 2023, Kamilo expected to receive USD 399,989 as part of the EPA SBIR Phase II funding for a project aimed at enhancing the capability to calculate the percentage of recycled content in products and communicate this information through a Kamilo "TrustMark" verification label.
