Big Akwa is a food-tech innovation startup that aims to revolutionize land-based aquaculture through industrial symbiosis with the process industry. The company's primary focus is on developing an efficient approach to fish farming by leveraging waste heat and resources from pulp and paper mills or hydrogen/e-fuel production facilities. Big Akwa's technology utilizes low-temperature heat typically wasted in pulp production to warm fish farm water, promoting faster fish growth and reducing energy consumption. The company also recycles "dirty" fish water by feeding it back into pulp production, serving as a food source for bacteria used in water purification steps. This process improves the environmental footprint of both fish and pulp production while realizing energy savings. As of June 2024, Big Akwa was developing a 6,000-metric-ton-per-year rainbow trout farm in Alby Östra, outside Ånge, Sweden. The company plans to build several land-based fish farms using this co-location strategy in the coming years. Big Akwa's technology is scalable and can potentially be paired with any pulp/paper mill, contributing to local economies and providing fresher, sustainable products.
