Car2Go was a free-floating car sharing service that allowed users to rent vehicles by the minute and pick them up or drop them off anywhere within a designated operating area. It operated under the parent company Share Now, a subsidiary of Daimler AG, and was one of the pioneers in the car sharing industry, launching in 2009. Car2Go's fleet consisted primarily of Smart ForTwo Electric vehicles, contributing to the company's eco-friendly approach. In cities like Madrid, users could move within the M-30 area due to the limited range of the electric vehicles. The service provided a cost-effective transportation alternative, charging rates like USD 0.21 per minute in Madrid. Car2Go prioritized convenience, enabling users to locate, reserve, and unlock vehicles through a mobile app.
In October 2019, Share Now announced the withdrawal of Car2Go from several North American cities, including Denver, Austin, Portland, Calgary, and Chicago, citing challenges such as low adoption rates, high private car ownership, infrastructure hurdles, and underestimating the resources required for sustainable operations. By the end of 2019, Car2Go had ceased operations across North America.
