ReMatter is a Swiss robotics and building material company focused on creating sustainable solutions for the construction industry. The company's primary product is a hybrid earth-timber floor slab designed to replace reinforced concrete floors, which are a significant source of carbon emissions in construction. ReMatter's innovative floor slabs combine low-tech materials like earth and timber with high-tech robotics to create a sustainable alternative that is as durable, sound insulating, and fire-resistant as concrete, while being price competitive.

The company's patented floor slab system utilizes widely available, locally sourced, low-carbon materials. This approach allows builders to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, embodied energy, and overall environmental impact while maintaining high performance and comfort. ReMatter's floor slabs achieve 80% less embodied carbon than their concrete counterparts. The slabs are prefabricated in a controlled environment using robots, ensuring competitive pricing and consistent quality. This automation process also eliminates drying time and enables faster on-site installation.

ReMatter's technology addresses the construction industry's need for sustainable alternatives to concrete, which accounts for 8% of the world's carbon emissions. The company aims to make construction fully circular and emissions positive. A 10,000m2 office building using their hybrid floor slabs and powered by renewables would become net zero in forty years and net positive thereafter. The company's goal is to produce 900,000m2 of slabs annually by 2028, equivalent to 90 football fields.

Key customers and partnerships

ReMatter has collaborated with ZPF Ingenieure and Herzog & de Meuron to conceptualize and design their pre-fabricated modules. These modules have been developed by the Swiss real estate company Senn for the House of Research, Technology, Utopia and Sustainability (HORTUS) in Basel, Switzerland. In September 2023, ReMatter partnered with ETH Zurich for a CHF8 million transformation fund to accelerate the adoption of earth-timber structures. The company's current project pipeline includes schools, residential buildings, and office buildings. ReMatter's products are particularly suitable for multi-residential housing but can also be adapted for use in office or educational projects.

In November 2024, ReMatter partnered with Tell-Tex to construct a new processing facility in Switzerland.
