Ohoskin is an Italian startup founded in 2019 that produces a bio-based leather alternative made from byproducts of Sicilian oranges and cacti. The company's patented material consists of 48% plant-based components from orange and cactus farming byproducts and 52% recycled plastics. Ohoskin claims its product aims to provide a sustainable and animal-free alternative to traditional leather while maintaining a luxury feel and durability. The leather’s intended applications include fashion accessories (bags and shoes), automotive, furniture, and nautical. The company also reports that its production process has been industrially optimized and that it is able to supply custom colors as per client needs.
Ohoskin's production takes place in a former petrochemical plant that has been restructured as a green industry facility. The company claims its material reduces carbon emissions by 90% compared to traditional leather production due to its non-fossil formulation and use of recycled components. Ohoskin also reports that it repurposes ~1.3 million tons of agricultural waste from the Sicilian agri-food and cosmetic industries annually.
As of October 2024, the company has priced its leather alternative at EUR 30 (~USD 32.6) per linear meter, with a minimum order quantity of 200 linear meters per order. The company reports that it offers larger quantities at lower prices.
