Silicate, an Ireland-based carbon removal startup uses an advanced weathering technology to turn CO2 into carbonates. The company accelerates its enhanced weathering process by spreading crushed waste concrete on farmlands. Additionally, the recycled concrete adjusts the soil's pH balance to increase the productivity of crops. Silicate assesses the sequestered carbon from the soil, soil waters, and gases to generate credits for corporate customers to offset their carbon footprint.
In November 2023, the company conducted the initial trial of its advanced weathering technology in Chicago, US.
Funding and financials
Silicate’s most recent funding was in March 2023, when it received a grant of USD 100,000 from the THRIVE|Shell Climate-Smart Agriculture Challenge.
