Bpacks is a UK-based startup that converts agricultural waste into bio-based packaging materials suitable for fresh produce, meat, and cosmetics. Up to 75% of raw materials the company uses are sourced from production waste such as waste bark from timber production and coffee grounds, in addition to other agricultural waste. The company compounds and forms these into pellets or sheets which can be used to create rigid packaging. Bpacks packaging material has customizable properties and can be seamlessly integrated with equipment used by manufacturers, in processes such as injection molding or thermoforming. The company also reports that it intends to license its bioplastic production technology to plastic packaging companies as it does not require customized equipment.
Bpacks claims its material is compatible with high-moisture products, despite fully decomposing in moist soil within one to two months, also making it home compostable. As of April 2024, Bpacks reports it is testing antimicrobial qualities of its material which would make it suitable for produce and meat packaging.
The company is yet to commercialize its technology as of April 2024.
