A global software company founded in 1999 by John Baker and located in Kitchener, Canada, D2L (Desire2Learn) is the developer of Brightspace, a cloud-based LMS. Brightspace is used by schools, higher education, and businesses for online and blended classroom learning. Brightspace comprises three integrated platforms: Learning Environment, Learning Repository, and ePortfolio. Learning Environment allows teachers and instructors to design interactive training courses using a choice of multimedia and to evaluate assignments. Learning Repository allows academic institutes and organizations to create, organize, and query learning resources in a centralized content database. ePortfolio is a common platform where learners can share experiences with peers and mentors. In January 2023, the platform announced an expanded offering that consists of tools for administrators and teachers, workflow simplification, and a robust ecosystem.. In August 2024, D2L launched D2L Lumi, a new AI-powered package integrated with its D2L Brightspace platform.

Key customers and partnerships

In July 2020, D2L announced a deeper integration of its Brightspace LMS with Microsoft Teams allowing users to transition between both tools seamlessly, and strengthened its presence in India through a strategic partnership with Edutech India who will handle product sales and support in the country. In August 2021, D2L announced a partnership with Australian EdTech company Crystal Delta, to allow for course migration to the Brightspace LMS using its migration solution Crane.In August 2024, D2L partnered with Readspeaker, providing lifelike online and offline text-to-speech solutions, to integrate its tools with D2L's Brightspace LMS, improving accessibility for instructors and learners across campus.
