Q.Big 3D

Q.BiG 3D, a spinout of Aalen University based in Germany, is a seller of 3D printers. Its printer, Queen 1, uses patented variable fused granular fabrication (VFGB) technology, which uses two nozzles during the printing process—one for fast and high-volume printing and the other for applying precise surface details and intricate structures. The system uses widely available plastic granules as its initial material, which makes large-format 3D printing economical. The company claims that its technology enables shorter lead times and cost reductions compared with alternative processes like milling or casting. Q.Big 3D targets various industries including rail, commercial vehicles, aerospace, and architecture.

During the initial phase of the Queen 1 printer, beta customers claimed to have produced large components like rear light carriers, pipe flanges (for the energy tech sector), and side doors for helicopter cockpits (since autumn 2022). As of July 2023, Q.BIG 3D was reinforcing its distribution to meet the demand for the series production, which was scheduled to commence by the end of 2023.

Funding and financials

In July 2023, Q.Big 3D raised EUR 2 million (~USD 2.2 million) in Series A funding led by the HZG Group, with participation from existing investor Manz AG and Manz Founder Dieter Manz. The funds were to be used to launch its Queen 1 printer.
