Daimler announced that its trucking division is buying a majority stake in self-driving vehicle company Torc Robotics.

Torc Robotics produces retrofits that can transform existing machinery or a vehicle to operate autonomously. The company's Level 4 autonomous system has successfully run on both urban roads and highways under various weather conditions. Daimler and Torc Robotics started testing self-driving trucks on roads in Virginia in September 2019, and expanded to include New Mexico and Texas in 2021. The company also has a testing center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, an engineering office in Austin, Texas, and a technology and software development center in Stuttgart, Germany. Torc Robotics has partnerships with Amazon Web Services (AWS) (February 2021) and simulation and software tools provider Applied Intuition (early 2020; extended in November 2021), to design tests and run simulations of its second-generation trucks, with plans to commercialize the product by 2030. The company also has a partnership with Google Waymo (October 2020) to build Level 4 autonomous trucks, integrating Waymo’s autonomous driving technology into a version of its Freightliner Cascadia semi-trailer trucks.
In February 2023, Torc Robotics signed an agreement to acquire Algolux Inc., a developer of perception software for automotive applications and smart cities. The deal remains subject to customary pre-closing activities, including obtaining required approvals.
