Qaptis is a Switzerland-based startup that originated from EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) for capturing CO2 emissions of heavy-duty vehicles. The company’s solution can be retrofitted into the existing infrastructure of freight trucks.
Qaptis developed a device that can be attached to the exhaust pipe powered by the vehicle engine’s waste heat to capture CO2. The CO2 is separated from other gases, such as nitrogen and oxygen, by passing the emission over an organometallic powder-based adsorbent while high-speed turbochargers convert it to a liquid state. Qaptis’ system stores liquid CO2 in a tank behind the vehicle to be drained when the truck returns to its freight terminal.
In June 2023, the company validated its technology from a lab setting to an advanced research facility through a prototype. Qaptis aims to operate its first test vehicle in late 2024 and commercialize its carbon capture system by 2026.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2023, Qaptis partnered with Friderici Spécial, a Swiss road transport company, to install Qaptis’ first CO2 capture prototype in the latter’s trucks.
Funding and financials
The company’s latest funding round was in March 2023, when it raised CHF 1.3 million (USD 1.5 million) in a pre-seed round led by BlackWood, Cargill, YB Startup, and Plug and Play Tech Center. Qaptis earmarked the funds to validate its technology and expand its workforce.
