Adena Power is developing a sodium solid-state battery, which would be capable of providing energy storage at less than USD 50/kWh compared with lithium batteries, which on average cost USD 152/kWh (2023). Additionally, Adena’s battery would be made from raw materials sourced domestically in the US to eliminate dependence on foreign critical minerals.
In December 2022, Adena carried out a 1 kWh module demonstration and was expected to carry out a larger external demonstration with a utility partner in 2023.
Key customers and partnerships
In January 2024, Adena carried out an initial demonstration of its MVPRO short-stack module in partnership with the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research.
In February 2024, Adena partnered with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to secure exclusive licensing of its sodium metal halide battery patents.
Funding and financials
In January 2024, Adena Power received undisclosed funding from the Ohio State University – Center for Automotive Research (OSU-CAR) as part of the US Department of Energy’s funding programs. The company intended to use the funds to accelerate model-level testing and validation of their sodium based long-duration energy storage. Prior to this, in October 2022, the company raised USD 2 million in a seed funding round led by Nexceris.
