Pivotal is a UK-based biodiversity measurement platform that provides species-level biodiversity data and analysis, bringing together data analytics, machine learning, biodiversity monitoring, and ecological design.

Using drones, acoustic, and image sensors, the system monitors plant and animal life on the land in detail. The collected data undergoes machine-learning analysis followed by expert validation. The increase in biodiversity is then translated into tradable assets called “Nature Uplifts,” designed as a way for companies to invest in nature restoration around the world. These assets can be traded between suppliers and buyers on the Pivotal Nature Exchange, the exchange platform for biodiversity restoration. Under this system, biodiversity providers are paid to increase biodiversity on their land. Pivotal's platform facilitates the tracking of biodiversity changes and credit value tied to tangible gains, offering transparency for credit projects and buyers.

Pivotal claims to reduce the cost of documenting site-level change by as much as 98%, allowing as few as 1,500 workers to assess 100 million hectares annually.

Key customers and partnerships

In July 2023, the company partnered with Plan Vivo to deliver the first biodiversity certificates. The two companies also developed a methodology for the biodiversity standard called “Pivotal for PV Nature,” which emphasizes high-integrity, auditable data, and evidence-based biodiversity outcomes.
