Sapeon Korea, founded in 2016 as a spin-off from SK Telecom's internal research and development division, specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. The company introduced South Korea's first AI chip for data centers in 2020 and has since expanded its offerings to include solutions for autonomous driving and edge services. In November 2023, Sapeon Korea unveiled its latest AI semiconductor, the 'X330'. The company's focus on developing advanced AI chips positions it as a significant player in the neural processing unit (NPU) market, which is experiencing rapid growth amid intense global competition in the AI industry.

In June 2024, Sapeon Korea announced a merger with Rebellions, another South Korean AI chip company. This strategic move aims to create the country's leading AI chip entity, combining Sapeon Korea's established presence in the market with Rebellions' innovative approach to AI semiconductor design. The merger is expected to enhance the new company's competitiveness in the global AI chip market, particularly in the development of chips for large language models (LLMs) and data center applications.
