Hydrogen Chemistry Company (HyCC), a joint venture between Macquarie's Green Investment Group (GIG) and Nobian, is a Netherlands-based operator of hydrogen production facilities. HyCC leverages the industry expertise of its founding companies to develop large-scale water electrolysis projects targeting high-emitting industries such as aviation, shipping, and steel.
As of October 2023, HyCC has five projects in the Netherlands and one in Germany. These plants vary in size, with annual production capacities ranging from 3,000 tons to 30,000 tons.
In December 2023, the company announced its decision to postpone its green hydrogen project H2eron in Delfzijl until 2028 at the earliest, due to the slower development of the hydrogen market and the rising costs of hydrogen projects. In its new plan, HyCC intends to increase the capacity of H2eron up to 50 MW in order to reduce the cost per kilogram of hydrogen produced. Accordingly, it has canceled the order for 40 MW of electrolysis stacks from Nel and is in discussions to use their alkaline electrolyzers in the new 50 MW facility instead.
Key customers and partnerships
HyCC partnered with German gas company VNG AG in September 2022 for the GreenRoot project in Germany. Through the partnership, the companies were to conduct feasibility studies and explore the potential for green hydrogen in the region. In February 2022, the company partnered with bp to further develop H2-Fifty, a 250 MW green hydrogen plant in the port area of Rotterdam.
