Next-gen Carbon Utilization: Sustainable Fuels
?

Carbon Capture Scotland Ltd. (CCSL) is a UK-based carbon capture company that decarbonizes industries that generate biogenic CO2 from the decomposition, fermentation, or combustion of organic matter. The company focuses on capturing CO2 that is stored in grains and barley from emitter sites. The company then uses the captured CO2 for dry ice production in the pharmaceutical and food sectors or sequesters it in geological storage.

The company planned to develop Project Nexus with an investment of GBP 120 million (~USD 149.6 million) to support large-scale decarbonization for farmers, distillers, and energy-from-waste companies. Through this facility, CCSL aimed to sequester 90% of Scotland’s biogenic CO₂ emissions by 2040. The company designed Nimmons900, a mobile carbon capture unit formulated for CO2 sources from fermentation. CCSL aimed to capture one million tons of CO2 annually by 2030 and expand to other sources of biogenic emissions such as anaerobic digestion and biomass incineration.

In February 2024, Carbon Capture Scotland secured a major CO2 storage project in Denmark, enabling 300,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 removal annually.

Key customers and partnerships

In July 2023, the company partnered with Iona Capital to capture and reuse the green CO2 emitted from Iona's biomethane plants in the UK. In August 2023, Carbon Capture Scotland partnered with Whyte & Mackay, a UK-based whisky distiller, to remove biogenic CO₂ from the latter’s distilleries.

Funding and financials

The company’s most recent funding round was in November 2023, when it raised an undisclosed investment from Iona Capital to develop CCSL's Project Nexus. In April 2023, Carbon Capture Scotland raised an undisclosed amount in a venture capital round led by Steyn Group. This funding was reserved to develop the company’s first modular carbon capture units.
