XpertSea is a Canadian company that provides technical and financial solutions for sustainable shrimp farming using AI, machine learning, Big Data, and computer vision. The company initially offered its solutions to shrimp farms and hatcheries in Asia and Latin America and has since expanded to Europe and North America with customers at over 150 facilities in over 50 countries . XpertSea has also diversified to provide information on other fish species, such as tilapia, sea bass, and salmonids.

The company’s AI-based solution automates animal data collection, monitors organism health, and allows early problem detection for aquaculture producers. The solution offers a hardware component known as “XperCount,” a portable device that claims to count, size, and weigh aquatic organisms in minutes, with an accuracy rate of over 95%. It can also predict the commercial class size of shrimp over 30 days in advance. This device then feeds the data to the company’s online Growth Platform to analyze and give producers key information on their operations to optimize feed and additives, harvest, and shipments.

In 2020 , XpertSea launched the first data-driven marketplace , which uses AI and financial services to connect shrimp farmers and buyers. Farmers can use the company’s smartphone app to capture crop data such as average body weight, growth rate, and weight distribution, and transact with buyers and receive payment within 24 hours of harvesting.

Key customers and partnerships

In May 2023, the company partnered with Conservation International to launch a Climate Smart Shrimp pilot in Ecuador, aiding farmers in accessing financing for climate-smart practices and driving investment in mangrove restoration for biodiversity and climate resilience. Animal health providers, feed and genetics companies, and research centers and universities also use XpertSea’s technology, including Oro Del Pacífico, Camaroneras Isamar, and ASOCAM.
