Yellowdig is an educational technology company that provides a community-driven active learning platform. The platform is designed to build learning communities by combining gamification principles with a social media interface. Yellowdig's core product, Engage, supports active learning, student agency, and aims to increase course participation, engagement, and retention. As of 2023, over half a million students were participating in Yellowdig's platform, which is used across various types of higher education institutions including large public universities, community colleges, small colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions.
The platform allows users to participate in discussions, provide peer feedback, conduct polls, and collaborate by sharing resources. It integrates with existing Learning Management Systems (LMS) and pulls in data automatically, enabling students to check course plans and grades while instructors can view input grades and results in one place. Yellowdig's proprietary gamification features, which received a patent in October 2020, include a prediction and alert system that identifies students at risk of dropping out. The platform's point system encourages organic student interactions around instructor-chosen topics, moving away from traditional "post once, comment twice" pedagogy.
Yellowdig's approach aims to create a 24/7 learning community that extends beyond the classroom, fostering a sense of belonging among students. Behaviors encouraged by Yellowdig's platform were associated with better academic outcomes. The company's technology is designed to work across various course modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses.
