Arda Biomaterials is a UK-based startup that converts brewery waste into a leather alternative. The company’s material, “New Grain,” is made from brewers’ spent grain and can be customized according to finish, pattern, and color. It can be used as a leather alternative in the fashion, home goods, and automotive industries, among others.
Arda leverages supramolecular structures that mimic the framework of collagen, combined with the high levels of protein, cellulose, and lignin present in brewery waste to create New Grain without relying on plastic-based additives. The material is also being tested for biodegradable properties. Arda also claims it can create the material in under 24 hours, making production scalable and efficient.
New Grain is under development as of January 2024 and is not yet commercially available. In June 2023, the company announced that it hopes to have a limited run of a finished product, which can be sold to brands available within the next twelve months.
Funding and financials:
In June 2023, the company secured GBP 1.1 million (~USD 1.4 million) in a pre-seed round led by Clean Growth Fund, with participation from Plug and Play, Serpentine Ventures, Satgana, and a group of angel investors from alternative protein, fashion, and the climate tech ecosystem.
