Bloomlabs is a startup that converts natural waste byproducts into plastic fibers. The company claims that its pellets can be integrated into manufacturers’ production processes as a greener alternative that does not involve feedstock risks or the environmental impact of petroleum. Bloomlabs’ proprietary technology uses a combination of bio-manufacturing, advanced protein engineering, and molecular biology to plasticize proteins found in waste, such as biomass, waste food, and textiles. The pellets generated by this process are spun into fibers that can emulate a number of texture and performance characteristics, including those of cotton, polyester, and silk, making Bloomlabs’ material an alternative to natural and synthetic fibers.
Founded in 2023, the company is yet to commercialize its product as of January 2024, when Bloomlabs reported it had unveiled its melt-spun protein fiber at Biofabricate in Paris in a global-first for the technology.
In June 2023, Bloomlabs raised an undisclosed amount of funding in seed funding from IndieBio and SOSV.
