Based in Switzerland, NEMATX is a spin-off from ETH Zurich, which offers a range of polymer-based AM solutions including a 3D printer system and corresponding materials. Its patented "Nematic 3D Printing" technology centers around the use of liquid crystal polymers (LCPs), which are composed of short, stiff molecules that can be used to produce lightweight polymer parts. The company claims that LCPs can offer improved strength compared with materials like PEEK or PEI and temperature stability beyond 250°C.
It leverages this technology in its flagship 3D printer, dubbed NEX one, to enable the additive manufacturing of precision electrical components. Notably, the solution features an in-line monitoring system that can be used to control filament diameter and ovality during production, allowing for the production of parts within a reported accuracy of 25 µm.
Key customers and partnerships
In July 2024, the company entered into a partnership with POLYPLASTICS, a subsidiary of DAICEL Group, to collaborate on several initiatives. This included 1) the creation of novel polymer grades and tailored industrial 3D printing processes, 2) the incorporation of POLYPLASTICS’ polymer processing expertise to improve 3D printing resolution and thermal stability of additively manufactured products, 3) market expansion, and 4) the development of eco-friendly materials and production processes.
