Farcaster

Farcaster is a decentralized social networking platform deployed on Optimism, a layer-2 scaling protocol. The platform allows users to set up profiles, publish “Casts," follow other users, and gain control over their data, audience, and interactions. A key feature of Farcaster is its innovative "Frames" functionality, which allows users to embed interactive experiences directly within their posts or Casts. These Frames can range from polls and live updates to NFT minting and gaming, enhancing user engagement and fostering a dynamic content-sharing environment. 

The platform operates on a hybrid architecture, combining on-chain and off-chain components. User identities and essential data are stored on the Ethereum blockchain, ensuring transparency and immutability. In contrast, user interactions such as posts, reactions, and follows are managed off-chain through a network of peer-to-peer servers called "Hubs," optimizing performance and real-time data access. In addition, it employs a rental-based storage system to combat spam and promote efficient data management, with users charged a fee to rent storage, limiting the number of posts, reactions, and follows they can make within a certain period. This also disincentives bot activity on the platform.

In March 2024, Farcaster reported over 140,000 registered users, with 70% having connected a personal wallet to their profile.
