Glencore plc (LSE: GLEN) is a Swiss-based multinational commodity trading and mining company. Founded in 1974 as Marc Rich & Co., Glencore has grown into one of the world's largest natural resource companies, with operations in over 35 countries across the globe. The company went public in 2011, listing on the London Stock Exchange.
Glencore's operations span three main segments:
Metals and Minerals: Mining and production of copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, ferroalloys, and aluminum. Also includes metals warehousing and trading.
Energy Products: Coal mining and oil production, as well as related trading and logistics.
Agricultural Products: Production, processing, storage, and trading of grains, oilseeds, cotton, and sugar.
In recent years, Glencore has faced several challenges and controversies. In February 2024, the company reported a significant decline in profits for 2023, with net income falling 75% to USD 4.28 billion due to lower commodity prices. Glencore has also been subject to multiple investigations and legal proceedings related to alleged bribery, corruption, and market manipulation in various countries. In 2022, the company agreed to pay over USD 1.1 billion to resolve investigations by US, UK, and Brazilian authorities. Glencore states it has invested heavily in improving its ethics and compliance programs in response to these issues.
