Recyc’Elit is a French textile recycling company that develops a low-carbon recycling process that processes polyester-based textiles and various PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic waste. Recyc’Elit uses a patented chemical separation technology to separate polyester from other fiber materials without damaging the second material. The shredded textiles go through a patented formulation and are adapted according to the specific end product. Then, the PET part is depolymerized selectively under very moderate heating conditions. The non-reacted fibers during this process will be recycled in another cycle, while the PET monomers undergo further polymerization.
The company’s proprietary system is designed for complex, multi-material polyester recycling. The process depolymerizes PET fibers back to their original monomers—namely, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. The monomers are used to produce virgin PET for food-grade products and textiles.
Key customers and partnerships
In April 2021, the company launched the SOFTDEPET (SOFT DEpolymerization of PET) project with its two partners, IVA Essex and IMP-INSA Lyon, to develop its first pilot demonstrator. In February 2022, they repolymerized Recyc’Elit’s first recycled dimethyl terephthalate monomer (DMT) into a 100% recycled PET resin.
Funding and financials
As of November 2023, the company’s most recent funding was in October 2023, when it raised EUR 3.2 million (~USD 3.4 million) led by Demeter, a French venture capital firm. The funding was intended to commercialize Recyc'Elit's recycling solutions for complex textiles and plastics.
