California-based Kiverdi adopts carbon transformation technology to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into food and bio-based products using microbes called hydrogenotrophs. Kiverdi has more than 50 granted or pending patents for its technology. These single-cell bioprocessing organisms act like plants in converting CO2 into food.
Kiverdi’s commercial solutions include Air Protein, Revive Soil, CO2 Aquafeed, and Reverse Plastics. Air Protein is a spin-off company of Kiverdi, which produces air-based meat from captured CO2, together with oxygen, nitrogen, water, and mineral nutrients. These feedstocks undergo Kiverdi’s proprietary probiotic production process for the production of protein nutrients. Revive Soil converts CO2 into organic crop nutrients, while CO2 Aquafeed converts CO2 into an alternative form of fish feed.
Key customers and partnerships
In December 2019, NuFrontiers, the innovation division of Nutreco and Skretting, started working closely with Kiverdi and pledged to invest USD 2 million on a novel feed ingredient pilot project. This project did not have a specified timeline, but operationalization was expected in four years if the pilot was successful.
In February 2024, Kiverdi and Procter & Gamble extended their collaboration under an EU grant to develop sustainable raw materials and create net-zero supply chains using Kiverdi's CO2-Tech innovation.
